This book is the first publication in full of the diaries and letters of G.T.W.B Boyes, a Peninsular veteran of artistic talent who was appointed auditor of Van Diemen's Land in 1826.

This, the first of three projected volumes, includes a full commentary on the text, an extensive bibliography, a biographical introduction, and a 'Peninsular Prologue" which discusses the influence of the Peninsular War on both Boyes and the Australian colonies.
